Recent Work: Leagues Article for Gradient.is

I was so happy to write about the new Leagues’ album, Alone Together, for Gradient.is. The article published today — and the album released today! Here’s a snippet: Leagues frontman Thad Cockrell told Jeremy Lutito (drummer/programmer), “‘Man, I don’t think this record’s right. I’m not having any fun.’ I know what Leagues is, part of what we are trying to do is to go around the world and put off joy explosions. If you’re not having fun in the making of something, there’s no way in hell people are going to have fun when they listen to it.” Click here to read more.

Recent Work: The Purpose Hotel

In one of the biggest projects I’ve been involved in to date, I had the privilege of overseeing the editorial and marketing copy for The Purpose Hotel Kickstarter campaign. This hotel, a dream of photographer Jeremy Cowart (Huffington Post’s most influential photographer on the web), this hotel reimagines the hospitality industry as a vehicle to drive social change. The goal with the marketing copy (from the video scripts, to the campaign text and emails) is to allow backers to feel like co-founders in a movement – not backers of a product. Check it out here, and join us!

Recent Work: Wild and Free Book

Last summer I was invited to work on a manuscript for an upcoming Zondervan book called Wild and Free by Hayley Morgan and Jess Connolly. It’s a powerful anthem for young women to embrace who she is — and to reject the voices from within and without that tell them they’re too much or not enough. It was published in May and hit #95 sales rank out of all books on Amazon that day. Amazing! I provided developmental edit (a document with macro notes and the manuscript with notes throughout). For example, one of the immediate problems I saw with the manuscript was that it wasn’t clear which author was speaking when. To solve this problem, they added the speakers’ names to their respective chapter names. Problem solved! Table of Contents Anthem // Jennie Allen Introductions CHAPTER 1 // Jess: We Have Become Tame and Tethered CHAPTER 2 // Hayley: We Have…

Recent Work: Steven Curtis Chapman’s Worship and Believe Bio

This project was definitely one of the highlights of my career. I was invited to write the press bio (and Song by Song Synopsis) for Steven Curtis Chapman’s first worship project, Worship and Believe. This icon of Christian music has sold more than 11 million albums over his 30-year career, and yet this album is his first foray into corporate worship music for the church. I spent a good part of the day at the Chapman’s home, hearing his story and gathering the details. Part of the challenge with this project was to not only capture the newsworthiness of the project but to do it in a way that delicately handled the backstory. As most know, Chapman’s daughter was killed in an accident at the Chapman’s home, and that loss will forever influence his work as an artist and minister. Through that tragedy, hope emerged, and is captured on this album, which…

Recent Work: Lecrae in Concert

“Cara is the only person I know that can execute any project that’s given to her. From vision to execution, she does it all! Cara is the smartest person that I’ve ever worked with. Period.” –Derek Arms, Road Manager, Lecrae Over the past couple of years I’ve created marketing one-sheets and other marketing assets for 40 Deep, the artist management company that represents Lecrae, Andy Mineo, Tedashii, Michael Jr. and others. While at a Lecrae concert last May in Knoxville, I took advantage of my all-access and dusted off the ole camera for some concert photos. I studied photography in college and after college. I learned to shoot manually, develop my own photos and use them in website design. My husband and I even took photos as a side business before we had kids. But mostly I shoot just for fun these days, and taking photos this night was so…

Recent Work: Horizons magazine // TEAM’s 125-year Anniversary

I had the privilege of working with creative director Robert Johnson on a number of TEAM Horizons (the magazine of The Evangelical Alliance Mission) stories over the past few years. Last summer I was invited to oversee a special edition of the magazine commemorating TEAM’s 125th year in missions work. It was a huge undertaking with its fair share of bumps in the road, but the final product is beautiful. I enlisted the help of my amazingly talented graphic designer friend, Jamie Ascher, who created the special design and illustrations for this issue. You can download the full issue here. And while we’re at it, here are a few articles I wrote for them: Italy: Uncovering Lost Treasures A new ministry in Bologna helps women leave their life of prostitution behind. Papua: Overcoming Deep-Rooted Tribal Fears Nothing Less than a Lifetime A profile on Bible translators and linguists Mark and…

Recent Work: NIV Devotional Bible for Women

I’m thrilled to announce I’ve had the privilege of joining amazing group of women writers (two of my favorites, Margaret Feinberg and Annie Downs!) as part of NIV Devotional Bible for Women: Fresh Insights for Thriving in Today’s World. It’s scheduled to be published by HarperCollins Christian in September of 2015. Editor Angela Scheff has been tremendous to work with. I’ll have several pieces in the Bible, but if you’re hanging out in the Chronicles, I’ll most likely see you there. 🙂 I can’t wait to see the final product! Here’s a bit more about the project: The NIV Devotional Bible for Women brings the voices of bestselling female authors such as Naomi Zacharias, Alyssa Joy Bethke, Caryn Rivadeneria, Enuma Okoro, Kathy Khang, Laura Ortberg Turner, Margaret Feinberg and Annie Downs to you in a devotional format. With a foreword by Shauna Niequist, this Bible is designed around the special concerns, interests and needs of…
